Shipping AI Features Without Losing Reliability

An AI feature still needs ordinary software engineering. Clear interfaces, predictable errors, and deployment checks are what make model behavior useful to people.
Separate the model from the product contract
Define inputs, outputs, latency expectations, and fallback behavior independently of the model provider. This makes upgrades less disruptive and keeps the user experience stable.
Keep a deterministic fallback
When a provider is unavailable, the product should fail clearly or use a safe local path. A success-shaped empty response is difficult for users and operators to understand.
Deploy with evidence
Track a small set of representative examples, response time, and error rate on every release. The goal is not to eliminate uncertainty, but to make changes measurable.
